Covid-19 Impact in 2021
The information provided below is our best estimate on what the club will be able to offer based on what we know in the fall of 2020. Everything from group sizes, training venues, provincial sport regulation, and Township of Langley guidelines may require us to revise any and all aspects of the JD Group program.
General Description
Track and field at this age (9-13) is mainly a power and speed sport with a wide variety of events to choose from.
The Junior Development (JD) program will help athletes develop the fundamental movements and coordination required in running, jumping and throwing.
Coaches structure their lesson plans to promote progression technically in all events through repetition and reinforcement with the intention of producing multi-skilled, well-rounded athletes as they enter their high school careers.
Competition: There is a series of sanctioned of junior development track meets (ages 9-13) throughout May, June and July that allow athletes of all levels to compete. Athletes are encouraged to choose at least one run, jump and throw event to compete in at meets attended. Competing in meets is not mandatory but highly recommended as a way to develop comfort with performing in a competitive environment. Coaching will focus on performance improvement and athletes will receive instruction from both junior and senior coaches.

Competitions
Competition Information
Competitions are held on weekends. They vary from 1 to 2.5 day competitions. Athletes are encouraged to participate in as many meets as they wish. Parents can tailor their child’s schedule as they wish as they need not participate in all competitions, and need not participate in all events on all days. Most competitions are local and held in the Lower Mainland. At times the provincial championships are held outside the Lower Mainland so travel is required.
The Langley Mustangs supports its JD athletes at 4-5 local meets plus provincial championships. Due to COVID restrictions still in place there are no scheduled meets approved as of yet.
