Mustang Milestones

The Langley Mustangs track and field athletes have been peaking at the optimum time. The endless hours of training are obviously paying off. The athletes are putting up some impressive numbers just in time for the BC Championships, BC Pentathlon Championships and National competitions.

Georgia Ellenwood now holds the highest jump on record for any 14 year old in BC with a jump of 1.73 metres, attained in Kelowna on June 28th. The jump would have qualified her for the World Youth Championships for 16\17 year olds to be held this year in Italy. The same day, within an hour of her record breaking jump, she also ran to number 1 on the BC all time top ten in the 300 metre hurdles with a time of 45.22.

Also in Kelowna, Chris Sutherland, 17, ran the 400 metres in 49.72 seconds which meets the standard to qualify for the National Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec to be held in August. Chris now holds the Mustangs club record in the 400 metres and the 200 metres.

Robbie Gallagher, 18 and Andrea Vicic, 17 of the Mustangs will represent BC at the Canadian Junior track and field championships to be held July 17th to 19th in Charlottetown, PEI. Robbie holds the club long jump record of 7.20 metres.

Some of the younger members have left their mark as well. 11 year old Jordan Burke broke the Langley meet record with a javelin throw of 30.53 and is now number 2 in the BC record books. Tanika Dolfo, 10, ran 11.13 in the 60m sprint hurdles which earns her a BC Junior Development award.

These and other Mustang athletes hope to build on these performances in the upcoming Provincial and National Championship meets.

Langley Mustangs Break Four Meet Records in Yakima Washington

Fresh from an intense week of spring training at the University of Oregon, the Langley Mustangs Gold track team dominated the 35th annual Holder Relays in Yakima Washington. The cold weather did not deter Stuart Ellenwood from breaking his own meet record, set last year in the 400 meters with a new time of 51.60. Ellenwood was also part of the 4 by 100 meter relay team of Brennan Gademans, Gabe Marshalok and Braeden Dolfo, with a record time of 45.96. All four boys attend Langley Secondary School. Ellenwood's younger sister Georgia (grade 8) added her own contribution with a record breaking high jump of 5 feet 4 inches - not her personal best, but enough to win both the grade 9/10 and 11/12 divisions. Carolyn Sutherland was just shy of the record in the 100 meter dash, but managed to put herself in the books with a long jump of 16 feet 7.75 inches. Robbie Gallagher jumped a personal best in long jump which set an all time Langley club record which had lasted for 20 years. SPRING TRAINING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON - The Mustangs Gold Group had the unique opportunity of training for a week in Oregon. Three crowded van loads of 19 athletes, two coaches and a dog made the 8 hour trek to tracktown USA. The University of Oregon have one of the best track teams in the nation, and a facility that is second to none. The athletes were able to tour the university, eat on campus, and train at the track using speed belts, weighted vests, and ankle resistance. The team also competed in the Sheldon High School meet and a few members qualified for the University of Oregon preview meet. These kids were able to compete against some of the top athletes in their events. A humbling but rewarding experience. Some other highlights included a scavenger hunt, football on the Oregon coast and hill repeats on the sand dunes. Add some shopping and a movie, and the kids had a great balance of hard work, early mornings and a whole lot of fun. The devotion of coaches Kim Chapdelaine and Dwayne Lotnick paid off and the athletes responded with a tough work ethic and good behaviour. There is little rest for this group however, as the team leaves for Yakima Washington on the 27th of March.

Gold Group Gains Indoor Experience
A handful of athletes from the gold group had a chance to test their skills at a one day meet on February 15th at the University of Washington. These athletes are continuing to train hard under the coaching of Kim Chapdelaine and Dwayne Lotnick and it seems to be paying off. Competing indoors on a 200 or 300 metre track against university athletes is definitely a new experience for our group. Rising to the challenge in the 200 metres were Stuart Ellenwood (24.02), Brennan Gademans (24.32) and Gabe Marshalok (24.47). Jade Vaughn also achieved a personal best in the 800 metres with a time of 2.23. The athletes have little time for rest before the next indoor meet in Kamloops on February 21st and 22nd.

Four Mustang Athletes Bring Home Medals from Nationals!
The four Langley Mustang’s track and field athletes who qualified to be on the B.C. team to travel to Quebec for the Legion Canadian Youth Championships (also, known as the Nationals) , flew home on Tuesday evening, proudly wearing their smart new provincial B.C uniforms, and weighed down with the medals they won. To qualify for this prestigious meet, the athletes first had to prove themselves, at many qualifying meets, to be the best in B.C at their individual events . To medal at this meet is an incredible feat, as it means being one of the top three track & field athletes in the whole of Canada . The Nationals were held at the University of Sherbrooke , not far from Montreal in Quebec from August 6th to 12th. For a B.C track club to have four of their athletes in the Nationals is almost unheard of, and shows the dedication and high level of coaching and leadership at the Langley Mustangs track club.

The event in Quebec is sanctioned by Athletics Canada and many track and field stars who have attended the legions championships have gone on to world and Olympic glory. To get an idea of the competition our Langley athletes faced, over 300 athletes from all provinces and territories participated in this years Nationals. When the BC team arrived in Sherbrooke , they had two days to prepare for their events. The National Championships are divided into two sections, one consisting of two days prior to the actual meet, of training clinics, clinics covering sports psychology, nutrition, drug free sport, presentations, orientation tours and of course the practicing on the track. Accompanying the 300 athletes were 35 chaperones and 25 coaches. Before the track meet they attended an auspicious opening ceremony.

The second section is the main event, the exciting two day track and field meet, at the best track in Canada . It is the only track in Canada which is certified in Northern America , as a mondo track, which has the most superior surface and below the surface material which provides the athlete with excellent support and reduces stress injuries. The Mustang's athletes, Michelle Stuart, Stuart Ellenwood, Brennan Gademans and Jade Vaughan were very excited and keen to compete and to get to the track, but also appreciated the two days prior to the meet , which instilled in them a sense of pride of being part of their province¢s team, and they learned so much which they knew would prepare them for future national and international meets. They loved that the championships encouraged the fostering of friendships with other athletes from all parts of Canada , development of leadership and were looking forward to achieving their personal best performances at the track.

Saturday morning arrived, and luckily the rain and mist which had greeted them on arrival in Sherbrooke gave way to sunshine as the athletes warmed up and started to compete in their events. Giving tremendous performances ,their results were as follows: Jade Vaughan won the whole set of medals ! Gold , Silver and Bronze ! In the 80m hurdles Vaughan won bronze with a run of 12.46 seconds, just missing her personal best time of 12.40s In the 300m hurdles, Vaughan was seeded first with her personal best time of 44.30 and looked as though she may achieve a P.B. but hit a few hurdles , and came in second , winning silver with a time of 44.33s. She was chosen to compete in the 4 x 100 relay and she & her relay team won Gold and achieved a National record time of 48.29. Brennan Gademans, having been battling with a micro tear in his calf , courageously ran the 100m and came fourth with his exact personal best time of 11.39s. In the men’s 4 x 100m relay Gademans and his team won gold with a time of 44.79. Stuart Ellenwood, won a silver medal and a bronze for B.C. In the 800m under very hot conditions Ellenwood just missed his personal best time by hundredths of a second with a time of 2.00:86. In the 400m against a very strong headwind Ellenwood came 3rd with a time of 51.90s, his personal best being 50.93. Ellenwood , being the strongest runner in the medley relay, might have come away with a gold but one of the other athletes ran over the boundary line when passing the baton, so unfortunately the B.C. relay medley team was disqualified. Michelle Stuart was very brave to compete at the meet as in May of this year she injured her lower back throwing the javelin. She has been receiving weekly physiotherapy, and did not expect to throw anywhere near her personal best of well over 40m , so she was thrilled to come 5th with a throw of 38.68.

So all in all the Mustangs proudly arrived home with six shiny medals, after having a wonderful experience at the Games, and memories of new friendships to last a lifetime, seeing another Province and their first taste of National competition.

2007 Update
Last season was a success at many levels for all of our club members. While the focus of Track and Field at the JD level is based on a personal performance level, i.e. attaining and improving on your personal bests, there are a few standout performances from some of the high performance athletes that are well worth mentioning. The 1993 athletes have moved out of the JD program into the midget level of athletics. We congratulate them on their successes over the years and wish them well as they move onto bigger and better competition. We all look forward to seeing their excellence at practices and club meets.

All 2007 rankings and final results can be found at bcathletics.org.

Blue Level Training Update
The Blue level group started their training in January and are looking forward to getting onto the track. There are 17 participants in our second year of pre-season training and, if last year is an indication of the value in this, they all are anxious to start competing this season. The first meet they will attend is at the end of March. Eleven of this group are also eligible to compete at the BC Summer Games this summer in Kelowna, so the goals are set very high at this time.

2008 Schedule
The 2008 track and field schedule is now posted online, so ready yourselves for a fun and competitive season.
