Mustangs Open Strong in California

The Langley Mustangs posted strong performances throughout the state of California.  A handful of athletes tested their skills against some of North America's best over the month of April. Under sunny skies and temperatures reaching 28 degrees impressive performances were made. Georgia Ellenwood kick started the season off on April 17th with a personal best heptathlon score of 5288 points. Tiffany Matteazzi (Perkins) threw a season opener best of 51.36 metres in the javelin. Tiffany was recently inducted into the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame. Young Teagan Rashe who is in grade 10, competed with girls much older and threw a personal best of 40.39 metres. All girls are trying to make standard to qualify for upcoming national and international meets in the summer. Additionally representing the Mustangs Jarid Vaughn and Rohan Stewart sprinted their way to strong times and finishes. Vaughn now holds the club record for both the 100 metres at 10.82 and the 200 metres at 21.12. Not far behind Rohan Stewart made his season debut with a 10.82 in the 100 metre and a 21.83 in the 200 metres.

Mustang National Team para-athletes also competed in California this past weekend, April 27th- 28th, in the hopes of qualifying for the Paralympic World Championships in Lyon France in July. Braedon Dolfo (T13) ran 11.47 in the 100 metres, Dustin Walsh (T11) ran  54.49 in the 400 metres and 2008 and 2012 Paralympian Leah Robinson (T37) rounded off the field with a 1:13.03 in the 400 metres. All results were Athletics Canada "B Standards.

It has been a great start to the 2013 outdoor track and field season for these Mustangs and there are many meets in the upcoming months to improve on their performances.

Ellenwood Signs with Badgers

Picture
Long time Langley Mustangs track & field standout Georgia Ellenwood has accepted a full ride scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Badgers compete in the Big 10 conference in Division 1 of the NCAA.  The University has approximately 42,000 students and is located in the state capitol of Madison, Wisconsin.
Immediately after signing on February 6th, Georgia flies to Phoenix Arizona, where she will be participating in the Canadian Olympic Development Camp for Rio 2016.  She is currently the top ranked junior heptathlete in Canada.  Georgia’s goal for this summer is to qualify for Canada’s junior national team and compete at the junior Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru in August.  She will start at UW in September.
Georgia has been a member of the Langley Mustangs for the past 7 years.  “I am so thankful to my coaches Kim Chapdelaine and Dwayne Lotnick for everything they have done for me over such a long time”,  she said.  Chapdelaine is happy to see Georgia move on to a reputable program like Wisconsin.  “I have had the pleasure of coaching Georgia Ellenwood over a 5 year period.  Georgia is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and dedicated athlete.  Her goal from the beginning has been to represent Canada and sign at a prestigious NCAA university.  Georgia is such a highly motivated athlete, and Wisconsin is very fortunate to sign her to their school.  I am proud of her and look forward to supporting her on her new journey.”  Mustangs President Brent Dolfo added “Georgia is a phenomenal talent.  Her dominant performances as a high school athlete rank right up there with former Mustangs Debbie Brill and Leah Pells, who both competed for Canada in multiple Olympic Games”.  Chapdelaine and Dolfo were both on hand to watch Georgia sign on Wednesday.
