Mustang Pride
No rain and a
great turn out combined for a successful
home meet. The Langley Mustangs had over a
hundred participants from ages 9 to 81 years
old. The weather cooperated over the three
days of events which gathered athletes from
all over North America. It is the only time
that the entire Mustang club competes at the
same meet including our Junior Development
group which features our talented 9 to 13
year olds, our Legions and Gold groups which
have some of the finest athletes in Canada
and our Masters division with 81 year old
Ike Theissen , the only remaining original
Mustang from when the club formed over 30
years ago. With the addition of the
pole vault pit and the resurfaced oval the
facility was a complete success. A huge
thank you to all the athletes, officials and
parent volunteers that helped make the 31st
Annual Pacific Invitational a meet to be
proud of.

Ellenwood BC's
Best in Multi-events
Georgia Ellenwood is
the first Grade 9 student to win the senior
girls BC high school heptathlon.

The combined
events meet took place in Abbotsford on May 28th
and 29th. Girls from all over the Province
representing their schools came to compete in
seven individual events. Ellenwood won five of
the seven events - 100 meter hurdles, 200 meter
dash, 800 meters, long jump and high
jump. Adding the remaining two events (javelin,
shot put) her combined score was 4,661. This
was 116 points ahead of grade 11 Zarria Storm of
Oak Bay and 634 points ahead of third place
Hayley Lloyd (grade 12) of Ladysmith. Walnut
Grove's Shelby Smithson had a strong
performance, finishing in 5th place. Georgia is
a student at Langley Secondary School, and
trains with the Langley Mustangs club. The
competition continues at the BC High School
track and field championships on June 4th and
5th where Ellenwood will be a medal hopeful in
three individual events - the senior girls long

Mustangs set Club
Records set at Fraser Valleys
Siblings Chris and
Caroline Sutherland put in personal best
performances at the recent BC High School Fraser
Valley track and field championships. Battling
extremely unsettled weather, Caroline Sutherland
(16 years old) jumped an amazing 5.69 meters
which is now the longest female jump in the
Mustangs club record books. Older brother Chris
(18 years old) ran to a first place finish in
the 200 meters with a quick time of 22.37
seconds. This broke his own club record set
last year. The Sutherlands attend Brookswood High
School in Langley. Newcomer Alexandra Connor of
Elgin Park high school also set a record for 14
year old girls in the 800 meters with a time of
2:23.60. Other first place finishes from the
Mustangs representing their schools came mainly
in sprints and sprint hurdles. Brennan Gademans
of Langley Secondary won the senior boys 100
meters and Stuart Ellenwood of Langley Secondary
won the 400 meters. In sprint hurdles, the top
spots went to Mustangs Jesse Lynch of Langley
Fundamental, Tanner Strauss of W.J. Mouat, and
Ben Marshall of Walnut Grove in senior, junior
and grade 8 divisions respectively. Eli
Kastelein also claimed top spot in the distance
hurdles for Langley Christian School. Georgia
Ellenwood, a grade nine student at Langley
Secondary, came first in the female senior
division. Ellenwood won the senior aggregate
award with three first place performances in
long jump, high jump and sprint hurdles. Christina
Juert of Elgin Park won discus, throwing over 35
m. All of
these athletes have qualified for the BC High
School Championships to be held on June 4th and
5th at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
Grocery Grab a Huge
Success
For the first time the
Langley Mustangs and IGA MarketPlace hosted a 2
minute grocery grab to raise funds for the club. It
was a huge success. The winner, Larry Martin had two
minutes to accumulate as many groceries as he could
get his hands on. Encouraged by the cheers of the
Gold team Larry took off cart in hand. Larry's wife
Jennifer and two daughters, Cassidy (11yrs) and
Callie (9yrs) should be proud of his performance.
The Martin family will not go hungry with $1137.72
worth of groceries added to their household. It is
the first year in the Mustang club for the Martin
family and what a way to start the season. A special
thank you goes out to Walnut Grove IGA manager,
Charlie Lee for donating the facility and throwing
in an extra carton of ice cream to a couple of
smiling girls.

Mustang's High
Performance Groups Ready For Action
The Mustang’s
Gold Group, led by coaches Kim Chapdelaine, Dwayne
Lotnick and John Leavitt, have 25 athletes ranging in age from
15 to 19 years old. Training for this group started in
September with hill camp, weight training and core strength to
build a strong base to develop on.
Since
mid-October, training session have been 5 times per week.
Upcoming indoor meets will be February 14th, at the
University of Washington and Feb 18-20th in
Kamloops.
The Hawaii
training camp will occur during spring break and several of the
athletes will complet at the prestigious Oregon Preview March
20th. Ideally these athletes are looking for spots on the BC
team to compete at Provincial and National levels. Coach Kim
offers these words as encouragement:
Will
I am
I can
I will actualize my dream
I will press ahead
I will settle down and see it through
I will solve the problems
I will pay the price
I will never walk away from my dream until I see my dream
Achieved!
Only through FOCUS can you do world class things, no matter
how capable you are...
The Mustang's
newest training group is now known as the Legions/Summer
Games group. This group of athletes is led by Doug
Vicic. They have been working hard since the beginning of
January. The group consists of athletes who are 13 and older,
and dedicated to competitive training. Ideally the goal would
be to qualify for the Zone 3 team which will compete at the
upcoming Summer Games in Langley in July, or even the Provincial
team which will compete at the Nationals in August. The
athletes are focusing on power, endurance, core, speed and
strength and they achieve this through track workouts, pool
workouts, weight training and gymnastics.

These two
high performance groups of the Langley Mustangs Track and Field
Club are enjoying new challenges and friendships. They are
definitely becoming a supportive team as they strive to
accomplish their personal bests. Expect great things from these
kids.
